7 Tips for Extending Your iPhone 4S Battery Life
1. Adjust Screen Brightness
As most people are aware, the screen is one of the biggest battery drainers. Adjusting your phone’s screen brightness to a comfortable range is a good start to improving your battery life. The brightness setting can be adjusted at under the Settings app.
You can also turn on auto brightness under the Settings app to turn on the iPhone’s amibient light sensor. This feature gives your iPhone permission to adjust screen brightness automatically in different environments. The brighter your environment, the more battery you’ll save.
• To turn on the auto brightness feature, go to Settings app> Brightness>Auto-Brightness
2. Rethink Alerts
One of the most-used features of the iPhone is the Notification Center. The Center allows users to both receive email and notifications instantaneously. As it requires users to remain connected to the internet (which in turn can drain the battery), disabling alerts from the Notification Centre is an effective way to save on battery usage.
• To turn off the Notification Center, go to Settings>Notifications>Calendar and disable Notification Center.
3. Lower Screen-Lock Time
A long screen-lock time can affect battery life. Set your screen to go to sleep after a shorter time lag for idling. Even a difference of ten seconds can help save battery life. Around 30 to 60 seconds usually provides a comfortable time lag to screen-lock.
• To adjust the screen-lock time, go to Settings>General>Auto-Lock. Select your preference
4. Email Sync and Push Data
The ‘Push’ feature delivers new emails directly to your iPhone. However, it requires constant connection with your mail servers, which can drain battery life. You can switch off this feature by going to Settings>Mail>Contacts>Calendars>Fetch New Data.
5. Turn Off Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and 3G
If you’re not using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and have no reason to stay connected to 3G (or 4G), switch these features off. These wireless connections are key battery drainers and should be used selectively if you’re looking to extend battery life. A Bluetooth car kit can keep your battery charged up when you’re in the car.
• Wi-Fi. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi to switch off.
• Bluetooth. Settings>General>Bluetooth.
• 3G or 4G. Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data ‘OFF’
6. De-Sync Contacts
De-syncing mail folders and contacts can assist with improving battery life. Try de-selecting mail folders such as Sent Mail, Junk Mail, or Drafts from syncing. You may also find it practical to de-select automatic syncing of iCloud, Google, or Exchange contacts.
7. Turn Off Location Services
The iPhone has an in-built GPS that provides users with driving directions. The GPS features can be integrated with any app to provide specific directions to help you find your way to a physical location such as a restaurant or shop. This feature can be power intensive, so it’s best to switch it off when not in use.
• Settings>General>Location Services
